3 New Mexicans to know who just moved into the No. 1 spot
Gruet Winery’s Nathalie Gruet, Jaynes Cos.’ Marquardt and Affordable Solar’s Ryan Centerwall are 3 New Mexicans to know – Albuquerque Business First
Every year, one of our most extensive and exciting projects is creating the Book of Lists.
It’s our opportunity to give a personality to one of our most-valued editorial products, with a unique theme and cover. Our editor in chief, managing editor, data journalist, creative director and I sit down months before publication to brainstorm ideas. We talk about what’s fresh, what’s driving our coverage and what our business community is focused on.
Last year, we wanted to bring to light the people behind the Lists by focusing on the chief executives who lead our top companies, hence the 2015-2016 cover featuring a dozen CEOs whose businesses landed in the No. 1 spots. This year, the momentum in our community to highlight what makes New Mexico great inspired our “Love Where You Live” theme. We had a lot of fun exchanging ideas for images that fit that theme, but ultimately our talented creative director, Rachel Conger Baca, conjured the stormy and picturesque cover collage that mailed by the thousands this week.
Ryan Centerwall – CEO of Affordable Solar
While it may sound easy to compile our weekly Lists into one publication, it’s a massive undertaking by data journalist Juliana Vadnais, who completed her first Book of Lists this year, comprising over 1,200 companies and 1,100 executives.
And it’s not over.
Our next step is to bring this book to life, with a Love Where You Live-themed celebration Feb. 9, and you’re invited. Join us Downtown at the Albuquerque Convention Center, with our sponsors Moss Adams, Los Alamos National Bank and Exhib-it, for themed rooms highlighting everything you love about New Mexico.
Here are three local leaders, and New Mexicans to know, whose companies jumped into the No. 1 spot on their respective Lists in 2016.
1. Rick Marquardt, president/CEO, Jaynes Cos. Marquardt leads the massive general contractor, which moved from No. 2 in 2015 to No. 1 in 2016, based on 2015 gross billings. With nearly 300 full-time employees, Jaynes is a powerhouse company in our state, also ranking among the top private companies with $184 million in 2015 revenue. And Marquardt is an active leader in our community. He sits with me on the Albuquerque Economic Development board, and is on the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce board, as well.
2. Ryan Centerwall, CEO, Affordable Solar. This year, Centerwall’s 18-year-old solar installation company jumped from third-largest to largest on our Solar and Renewable Energy Companies List, ranked by 2015 revenue, of which Affordable reported $68 million — putting it far ahead of the rest of the pack. And they’re not just working hard at Affordable — they’re also having a lot of fun, according the company’s 70 full-time employees who ranked it among this year’s Best Places to Work.
3. Nathalie Gruet, president, Gruet Winery. I’m not just a fan of her product, I’m a fan of how this New Mexico leader has taken her nearly 30-year-old family business to become the No. 1-producing winery in the state, with 186,000 cases in 2015. That catapulted Gruet to the No. 1 spot on our Winery List, a full 51,000 cases ahead of No. 2. Based in Albuquerque, Gruet also produces the most-popular New Mexico wine, according to Wine Searcher, and debuted a Santa Fe tasting room this year.

Solar Comes Knocking: Array of Affordable Options is Growing
Amid growing competition among solar installation companies, potential customers can learn about the benefits of solar energy, empowering homeowners with a completely newfound ability to dump their electric utility in favor of moderate monthly solar bills that can often save money from the start while racking-up thousands of dollars in accumulated savings over the years.
Given the lengthy, 25-year commitments and warranties generally connected with either leasing or buying a solar system, consumers need to make sure from the start that the contract they sign is the right one for them.
“These agreements are based on many assumptions, and to get a return on investment, those assumptions have to hold true for 25 years, not just the first few years,” said Affordable’s general manager, Trishelle Kirk. “That means looking at a few key components of systems before committing, as well as the company doing the installation, to make sure it will produce the electricity offered.”
NM’s Solar Industry Shining Brighter
New Mexico’s solar energy developers say their industry is finally hitting its stride as thousands of new residential and commercial customers opt to go solar, and more utilities nationwide turn to the sun for electric generation.
Most important, solar prices have spiraled downward. Prices for both residential systems and utility-scale power plants declined by more than 50 percent from 2008-14, according to a recent study by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In 2015, prices overall fell another 17 percent, according to the SEIA.
“It shows the development and maturity of the industry,” said Ryan Centerwall, CEO of Albuquerque-based Affordable Solar, which installs systems here and sells them nationally.. “Even without state incentives, we’re still able to save customers money from day one and with no money down for a financed system, because it typically costs less now than for utility retail service.”
Solar Industry in Rapid Growth
All that growth is shining brightly on New Mexico, as well. Homegrown solar companies are reaping huge benefits in the local, national and international markets, with some companies reporting downright spectacular growth.
As of December, Affordable Solar Group – an Albuquerque-based company that sells and installs solar systems internationally – was projecting $48 million in revenue for 2014. That’s up from $31 million in revenue in 2013 and just $8.46 million in 2007.
That firm has made the Flying 40 list of fast-growing companies three years in a row.
“Most of our growth is outside of New Mexico,” said Affordable Solar President Ryan Centerwall. “We’ve opened new locations in the Caribbean, and in California and Las Vegas (Nev.). But the New Mexico market is also still doing very well.”
Business Properties Benefit from Solar by Affordable Solar
PR Newswire – Affordable Solar is proud to announce the completion of three commercial solar array systems located on different business properties in the metro area. Each project is a solar electric array, generating electricity for the property owners and saving them money in electric utility costs, which translates into higher value for the properties due to an improvement that pays for itself right away when financed.
Solar Leasing Arrives in New Mexico
“You don’t have to write a big check anymore to enjoy the benefits of solar electricity,” Centerwall said. “We’re providing solar power as a service with no out-of-pocket costs for homeowners.”
The companies install systems that can offset customers’ utility bills enough to make monthly electric costs less than what they pay now, either immediately, or over time as Public Service Company of New Mexico and other utilities raise their rates, Centerwall said.
